Since my mother passed away in 2018, I’ve had a standing appointment with a therapist. However, it was far from my only experience with therapy. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’m sharing this video today. It’s the first in a series of storytelling videos I mentioned earlier this week.
Who should see a therapist?
If you think therapy would be helpful, it probably will be. If you have a closed mind about it, you probably won’t get much out of it. You don’t need to have a particular stressor to get some help.
How long should a person go to therapy?
There is not a one size all scenario. It’s difficult to imagine that a single session would be very beneficial, but I don’t know what the lower limit is.
Why have you seen a therapist for six years now?
I have a few medical concerns that pretty nearly require me to maintain a good health insurance plan. I often meet my deductible and yearly max out of pocket costs pretty quickly. If the cost of therapy was out of reach, I would have quit going years ago. However, the last six years have come with a good number of stressors, so it’s been helpful.
How often do you have an appoinment?
Currently I attend a session approximately every other week. Weekly seems to be a loose standard for someone starting out. Frequency is also not a one-size fits all situation.

Feel free to ask me follow up questions in the comments here, at YouTube, or e-mail me privately. There are auto-generate closed capitons availabe on the YouTube video, but I will try to update this post soon with an official transcript.
